What they learn

February 28, 2010

I have become a bit of a fanatic about listening to podcasts as a way to reclaim the hours I spend commuting each week. This week I listened to a series on Christianity and culture by D. A. Carson. Much of the discussion is over my head, but in one of the recordings Carson said something that really opened my eyes.

My rough paraphrase of Dr. Carson:

“After several decades of teaching I have finally learned something big. That is that my students don’t actually learn what I teach. Instead, they learn what I’m excited about.”

This is huge! When we teach, when we advise, or when we speak it is what we’re passionate about that comes through and is retained.

Speak up about your passions!
